The Zeal of the Lord

The Zeal of the Lord! In our everyday conversations, zeal is not an often-used word. The 1828 Merriam Webster Dictionary defines zeal as the passionate ardor in the pursuit of anything. In general, zeal is an eagerness of desire to accomplish or obtain some object, and it may be manifested either in favor of any person or thing, or in opposition to it, and in a good or bad cause. It is the blind conductor of the will. Wow! That is a mouthful.

In this verse Isaiah transcribes the mission of God’s Messiah. This Child that was prophesized to come was to carry the weight of God’s government and its enforcement sitting on David’s throne. The passionate commitment of the power of God will accomplish this forevermore.  Verse six in Isaiah 9 is often quoted during Christmas time because it focuses on the birth of Messiah. But verse 7 reveals His mission and the power that ensures its success.

When we read the definition of zeal and then see how it is used in verse 7, it reveals God’s intense passion for His plan of salvation. This plan was established before time existed. The mission of Messiah was planned out and then prophesied from when Adam sinned in the garden. The zeal of the Lord, though burning like the hottest fire, was tempered by His love and patience. The plan was set and is still unfolding in our lifetimes.

Consider today, the zeal of the Lord: His passionate love for mankind. Yes, for you and your family specifically. The Word became flesh. He finished His work. Now, the zeal of the Lord will carry you through as one of His children to enforce His victory. It is a good day to be zealous for God. I bless you in Jesus’ name.
