When they arrived at Capernaum, the tax men came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay taxes?”
Peter said, “Of course.” … Jesus said, “Then the children get off free, right? But so we don’t upset them needlessly, go down to the lake, cast a hook, and pull in the first fish that bites. Open its mouth and you’ll find a coin. Take it and give it to the tax men. It will be enough for both of us.”
Dear Ones: The Tax Men! While I was working through my taxes this morning this event in the Lord’s life came to my remembrance. Taxes were due, but not rightly assessed. Money was required but not readily at hand. So, the Lord sent Peter fishing. Peter was well acquainted with the Lord and trusted Him to take care of the tax assessment. So, he went fishing. The fish delivered the right amount needed to pay the taxes for the Lord and Peter.
Sometimes the Lord provides for our needs but in unusual ways. It was an odd thing to expect to get tax money from a fish’s mouth. When tax money is due, governments give no mercy; it must be paid by the due date. But our Lord knows the need and will show you how to satisfy the situation. However, like Peter, you must be willing to obey His instructions in His timing.
The take away from this discussion is, “Do we trust the Lord to take care of our needs: financial or physical?” We must train our ears to hear His voice and our hearts to trust Him. Financial stress on the family is escalating in these chaotic times. As April 15th approaches for those who owe taxes it can be very serious. Worry comes from the dark one and keeps us focused on the problem and off the problem solver.
Go to the Lord in prayer. Talk to Him as you would talk to your wealthy natural Father. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Listen and obey. He probably won’t send you fishing, but who knows—only the Lord.
May you not fear the tax men but trust wholly in the helping hand of the Lord. He can make a way where there seems to be no natural way. Do not give into anxiety but talk to the Lord in your own words. All things are possible to the one who will believe. You are an overcomer in Christ. I bless you in Jesus’ name.
