Obedience is a sacrifice, a sacrifice of our will. Whatever we obey (appetites, self, devil, others) becomes an idol at whose altar we worship. Our acts of obedience bring honor to them. … Anything can become an idol, if its demands are obeyed consistently. Long-established habits are hardest to break because we have obeyed their demands, thereby worshipping them for an extended period. This has given them more and more control over our lives. … When we obey God, we are sacrificing our will to Him and subjugating ourselves to His Will.
