Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil.
Dear Ones: Guide My Steps! Holy Spirit is our Guide but we must choose to follow Him. He will guide us and lead us in the path of righteousness, but are we willing followers? In this portion of Psalm 119, the psalmist is asking to be guided by the Lord in agreement with His Word. The reason behind this request is to be delivered from evil. When we plant the seeds of the Word of God in our inner being, then the weeds of evil cannot overcome us.
If you have ever planted flowers in a garden, then you can understand the need to crowd out the weeds with good plants. The enemy comes to plant tares (weeds) to crowd out the good wheat (His Word). We have the choice whether to plant good wheat or to let the tares encroach and take over. The Word is a sharp instrument that will plow under the weeds while it plants the Living Word in their place.
When we choose to follow the Spirit, then darkness no longer has the upper hand in our lives. There is power in the Word of God to deliver us by leading us to the Light and away from the darkness. The more we fill our souls (minds, wills, emotions) with the Word then there is less opportunity for evil to overcome us. We become more than conquerors through Christ.
Like the psalmist, cry out to the Lord, “Guide my steps.” This is an everyday choice. Choose by your freewill to be led by the Spirit. Sow the seeds of the Word deep into the soil of your heart. The Lord is the ultimate Gardener, He only plants good seeds. Have an overcoming day. I bless you in Jesus’ name.
