Focus Your Thoughts

In conclusion, brothers, focus your thoughts on what is true, noble, righteous, pure, lovable or admirable, on some virtue or on something praiseworthy.
Philippians 4:8 (CJB—Complete Jewish Bible)

Dear Ones: Focus Your Thoughts! Yes, you have been given the Spirit of the Lord to lead you. Second Timothy 1:7 explicitly says this and more, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Those who choose by their freewill to be led by the Spirit of God are known in Heaven as “sons.” When we follow the Spirit then the fruits of the Spirit develop in us as we grow up spiritually.

The attribute of self-control enables us to focus our thoughts on praiseworthy things instead of the chaotic happenings of this fallen environment. We do not have to be victims of the dark thoughts that the enemy shoots at our minds like fiery darts. By the power of His indwelling presence and the glory of His Divine Nature we are to take control of our thoughts and words as overcomers in Him. We are no longer victims of wayward and condemning thoughts spoken into our minds by the tormentor.

But we must become sensitive to the leadership of the Spirit to alert us when these thought bombs come our way. The mind is a great battlefield. The enemy wants to get us to agree with his negative and destructive thoughts so he can have more access to our lives. When Holy Spirit alerts us to the encroachment of dark thoughts, then we are to use the instructions contained in this verse. Focus on His goodness and that you are an overcomer. The enemy may persist for a while, but he must flee as you stand your ground.

May you become proficient to focus your thoughts on praiseworthy things. Do not give place to the negative and destructive thoughts of the enemy. They are fiery darts meant to destroy your faith. But you are more than a conqueror through Him. I bless you in Jesus’ name.
