Now on Rumble—Spiritual Gifts Discerning of Spirits
Paul is continuing to move our videos off of YouTube and onto Rumble.
This lesson continues our study of Spiritual Gifts Discerning of Spirits. The word discerning could also be rendered distinguishing or discriminating. That is to understand the difference between one thing from another. Being able to discern the difference between the voice of the tormentor and the Holy Spirit is vitally important to all believers. Paul listed discerning of spirits among the nine gifts given to all believers through the operation of the Spirit in their lives. Without this gift believers are easily fooled by the great deceiver.

—1 Corinthians 12:8-11, NASB1995
In this chapter of Paul’s first letter bringing correction and instruction to the Corinthian Church, he enumerated nine distinctive gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Corinthians were Gentile converts coming out of an idol worshipping culture. They needed to be taught to reverence the Holy Spirit and to become sensitive to Him as He orchestrated the flow of these gifts in their meetings. Paul confirmed to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 1:7, NASB1995, “you are not lacking in any gift.” But they had to be taught how to move with the Spirit and not operate from their flesh.
Although Paul listed nine unique gifts of the Spirit, they do not necessarily operate separately. We must consider Paul’s purpose was to instruct these believers, so he was focused on revealing the types of gifts and not how they functioned. He also wanted to make them aware of the fact that the Holy Spirit was moving in their midst and must be reverenced. In chapter fourteen of this letter, Paul gave them more instructions on the gift of tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy and their functions.
