The Old Rule

And now I want to urgently remind you, dear friends, of the old rule God gave us right from the beginning, that Christians should love one another.
2 John 1:5 (TLB)

Dear Ones: The Old Rule! What is John referring to? It is the executive order issued by the Lord on the night He was betrayed found in John 13:34-35, TLB. “And so I am giving a new commandment to you now—love each other just as much as I love you. Your strong love for each other will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” This executive order has never been rescinded or altered. It stands today just as it was issued on that night.

So, why is John urgently reminding the recipients of this epistle? Because our love walk is the hallmark of true Christianity. He is calling believers back to the basics. Just like sports teams in spring training start with practicing the basics of their sport. Because the basics are the underlying foundation upon which success is built. It is the same with our Christian walk or witness.

The old rule or commandment to love one another is not just a mere suggestion. It is a command given to all believers. Believers are called to a higher standard of living that will prove to the world that we are His disciples. The Head of the Church commanded it. The Holy Spirit was sent to enable us to walk in love because it is a spiritual choice that wars with our human nature.

Resolve this new year, to follow the old rule to love the brethren just as much as He loves you. You are given a choice to obey His commandment. And the Holy Spirit—the Helper—is with you to help you succeed. The truth is that your love for others is to be His kind of love: Not given in grudging obedience but in joy. Start anew this year. Have a blessed week in Jesus’ name.
